3. Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan:

Meri-Zaat-Zarra-e-Benishan

A saga that spans over two generations, Meri Zaat Zarra-E-Benishan begins with the arrival of a girl named Sara (Sarwat Gillani) at the doorstep of a man named Arfeen Abbas (Faisal Qureshi). She hands him a letter, and he seems shaken after reading it. He asks her where “Saba” is, and she replies that she died four days prior. Arfeen falls to the ground in shock, but then regains his composure and asks Sara to give him her address, so that they can go there and gather her belongings. When they arrive at Sara’s home, which is quite small compared to Arfeen’s mansion, she leaves Arfeen in the main room and heads to her bedroom to gather her belongings. Arfeen finds a pair of Saba’s old sandals, and breaks down in tears as he grips them. Sara sees him as he cries and wonders why he is so sorrowful at her death. They head back to Arfeen’s estate, where he introduces Sara to his son, Haider (Imran Abbas). Haider is not initially pleased to have Sara staying in their house, but becomes accustomed to her after a while.

It is revealed in a series of flashbacks that Saba (Samiya Mumtaz) was Sara’s mother and Arfeen’s first cousin. Saba and Arfeen were madly in love, but Saba was treated with ire by most of the family, especially Arfeen’s mother (Samina Peerzada), because of her liberal views and ways. When Arfeen expresses his wish to marry Saba, his mother and father (Khayam Sarhadi), are very outspoken against the marriage. But when Arfeen states that if he cannot marry Saba then he will not arry at all, his parents finally agree.

Back in present time, Sara and Haider become good friends, and she becomes accustomed to living at Arfeen’s home, though she still speculates about what happened between him and her mother. She visits the rest of her family, including her aunts and uncles, and each person she asks refuses to give her any details about what happened. Arfeen, meanwhile, is worried that Sara will eventually leave his house. The only solution he can come up with is to have Haider married to Sara. Haider initially refuses, but eventually falls in love with Sara and agrees. Sara agrees to the marriage as well. But on the day of the wedding, Sara goes missing. Arfeen panics and asks Sara’s aunt Aqsa (Nausheen Shah) whether she told Sara what happened with her mother, and she says she did not. This prompts Haider to ask what happened, and Arfeen launches into the story.

Saba and Arfeen had gotten married just like they had wanted, but the day before Saba’s rukhsati, Arfeen’s mother asks Saba to go in a spare bedroom and set the bed for Arfeen’s sister. When Saba arrives in the bedroom, she finds that Arfeen’s mother had also asked a cousin of theirs who had also expressed interest in Saba, Aadil, to fix a curtain rod in the same room. When Saba attempts to leave, she finds that the door to the room is locked. She and Aadil both bang on the door, but nobody comes to their aid. After about an hour, Arfeen’s mother, along with most of the rest of their family, shows up outside the door. Arfeen’s mother starts yelling and creating a ruckus, saying that Saba and Aadil had been involved in illicit behavior in the locked room the whole time. Saba and Aadil refuse to having done anything, but nobody believes them.

Arfeen’s father beats Saba, and nobody comes to her aid as she is beaten. Nobody believes Saba, not even her mother (Ismat Zaidi) and sister (Fatima Effendi). When Arfeen hears about the incident, he is skeptical about what really happened, and questions Saba about it. She says she is innocent, but that she has no proof of it. Arfeen then asks her to take an oath with her hand on the Qur’an that she is innocent, and she agrees, on the term that his mother would take an oath as well. Saba has faith that her aunt is too kind and worshipful to lie on the Quran. Her assumption turns out to be wrong, however, and her aunt does lie on the Quran, prompting Arfeen to have proof that Saba lied, and he divorces her.

Arfeen gets remarried to a girl in America, but he is still in love with Saba. Saba’s parents forcefully marry her off to a 50-year-old man (Rashid Farooqi) of 4 children, who turns out to be abusive and beats her regularly. Nobody from her family visits her during this painful period of her second marriage. When Saba becomes pregnant, her husband refuses to believe that the child is his, and divorces her and kicks her out of the house. Saba gets a job as a maid at a rich woman’s home, and soon gives birth to a girl.

Arfeen’s wife (Mehreen Raheel), meanwhile, has already had a son with him. But the two do not get along. Back in Pakistan, nothing is going right for Arfeen’s family. One of his sisters has lost her husband, while the younger sister has been divorced and his mother is diagnosed with cancer. When Arfeen comes to Pakistan, his mother finally tells him the truth about Saba. Arfeen divorces his wife and tries to convince Saba to marry him. However, Saba tells him that while she still loves him, she cannot trust him again. Her parents also try to persuade her to come back to them. Saba, who is not ready to trust anyone again, leaves without letting anyone know of her whereabouts.

A few years later, she starts working at a garments factory and realizes that the factory is owned by Arfeen. She is friendly with Haider (Arfeen’s son). But she covers her face to hide her identity. She works there until the day she dies. Back in present time, it is revealed that Sara had overheard how her mother had been treated by Arfeen’s family. She is angry and runs away. Haider tracks her down a couple of days later and explains the whole story. Sara agrees to forgive the family and the two start a new life.

1.Alpha Bravo Charlie:

Alpha_Bravo_Charlie_title

As the name indicates, the drama is based on the life and times of three characters — Faraz, Kashif, and Gulsher also known as Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie respectively — and their friendship. These passionate young men wish to start their careers in the Pakistan army. In the initial episodes, ample footage is used to detail the background of every individual and the circumstances under which they enroll for the armed forces. Faraz is Mr Perfect, the guy who does everything right while Gulsher is a polite, simple-minded, shy person. Kashif is originally the funny man responsible for providing most of the comic relief through his antics, pranks and mischief. Eventually the series morphs into a coming-of-age story where the lead characters realize that there is more to life than their present happy-go-lucky lifestyle as they experience reality in all its fragility and extremities — jealousy, heartbreaks, trauma and death. Another important character is Shahnaaz, a confident, educated and well-mannered young lady, who plays an important role in the lives of these friends. Her involvement with them in the role of friend, wife and confidante adds reality to the series that is poignant and touching on a personal level. The main theme of the drama is that every person should lead a purposeful existence and that, if one has the will and the passion, he/she can achieve anything

2. Dastaan:

Hum_TV_drama_Dastaan_by_Haissam_Hussain

Built on the true events of partition of 1947, the series depicts the events of rioting and chaos in 1947 with Sikhs and Hindus raping and killing Muslims.

The series is based on the novel Bano.

Based on the novel, Bano, Dastaan begins with the wedding of Suraiya (Saba Qamar) and Saleem (). Suraiya’s nephew, Hassan (Fawad Khan) and Bano had no relationship whatsoever prior to Suraiya and Saleem’s wedding. They slowly begin to develop feelings for each other, with Hassan visiting Ludhiana every now and then. Hassan is in his final year at the Islamia College as an engineering student. He is an active supporter of the All-India Muslim League, and the leader of the Ludhiana Branch. He strongly believes in the establishment of Pakistan and is an avid follower of Qaid-E-Azam, the leader of the Muslim League and Pakistan Movement. Meanwhile, Saleem is an active supporter of the Indian National Congress, with all his friends being Hindu. He strictly believes that the establishment of Pakistan will not help, but rather lessen the position of Muslims in India. The political debate between Saleem and Hassan begins as friendly competition, but intensifies as conditions worsen throughout India for Muslims. Saleem, hot-tempered and rash, begins to bring political debates into family life and eventually forbids Suraiya to visit Hassan, her nephew. But Hassan is not dissuaded. He continues to spread the message of Pakistan throughout Saleem’s family, causing Saleem’s anger to explode on many occasions. Other than Saleem, his entire family become strong supporters of the Muslim League, especially Bano, who makes posters and signs for the Pakistan Movement.

Hassan and Bano eventually become engaged, and Saleem decides to leave behind his rivalry with Hassan for Bano’s sake. Soon, Hassan gets a job in Rawalpindi and has to leave immediately. He leaves Ludhiana, with the promise that they will be back 5 months later for the wedding. Meanwhile, Suraiya is pregnant.

During this time tensions between Hindus and Muslims escalate dramatically, and violence outbreaks all throughout India. Hate crimes against Muslims become common, and the fighting spreads all across India states, getting threateningly closer to Ludhiana every day. As the fighting becomes more pronounced, Muslims retaliate, leaving nobody safe. Saleem seems to be under the impression that his Hindu friends and families will be able to protect his family from rioters, but upon trying to get this assurance from them, they say, “What will we say to them? Why would they listen to us?” Saleem begins sensing a cold distance his Hindu friends have developed towards him and, while on his way home, encounters a sobbing Muslim man who lost his entire family and home. He begins to realize the importance of the creation of Pakistan and rushes home, telling his family to tightly lock up their doors and gates and to be ready for any kind of attack.

On a fateful night, a group of Sikhs and Hindus attack the family’s home. All of the men (which includes many other Muslims who sought refuge in their house) stay on the bottom floor with their swords and knives intending to fight. All the women —including Bano, Suraiya, and Bano’s mother, Bibi)- are huddled on the roof of the house. Saleem and all the men brutally murdered in a terrible massacre. A pregnant Suraiya, upon seeing her husband stabbed, throws herself off the roof to be with her dying husband. She lays next to him, trying to move her bloodied hand to be with his, but a Sikh rioter brutally stabs her womb, killing Suraiya and her baby. Other women also throw themselves from the roof while others are carried away to be raped and killed. Bano’s other brother, Faheem, before being killed, shouts to his mother: “Choke Bano!” Bibi, with Bano’s tearful consent, tries to choke her to death to protect her from losing her honor, virtue, and religion from the Hindu and Sikh rapists, but two of Saleem’s Hindu friends arrive claiming to save them.

Saleem’s friend, Ram, tries to rape Bano, but his other friend saves her by killing Ram out of guilt. Bano, alone with Bibi, manages to escape Ludhiana, where they seek shelter in a refugee camp for Muslims. The Muslim refugees are headed by a young brave Muslim man who lost his entire family. Thirsty and hungry, they try to walk to Pakistan, encountering poisoned wells along the way. Eventually, Hindu rioters attack this caravan. Bano is separated from Bibi and raped. Bano crawls toward her mother’s now lifeless body, seeing her Ta’wiz necklace next to it. Bano, grief-stricken and in shock, wears her it and lays next to her body.

A Sikh man (Bilal Khan) stumbles upon Bano and her dead mother, and he helps nurse her back to health after her first rape. He then boards her on a train heading toward Lahore and leaves. It was common for trains to arrive in Lahore full of dead Muslims with only a few survivors, and this train was no exception: it is attacked by Sikh rioters. Basant Singh (Babrik Shah), a rioter, chases after Bano on the train. She turns around and shouts, “Do it! Do whatever you want to do! Your Guru (God) will never forgive you! I’ll ask him myself if he taught you Sikhs to do this to girls.” She then falls unconscious, and Basant Singh kidnaps her, bringing her to his home. She awakens in his home where he and his mother live. At first, she refuses to tell them her name, and so Basant Singh calls her Sundar Kaur, meaning “beautiful princess” in Punjabi. He gives her the impression that he will take her to Pakistan himself once the dangers are gone. He also tells her she can write to Hassan and he’ll deliver the letters. Bano believes his lies and cannot wait to go to Pakistan.

Throughout her time there, they constantly try to convert her to Sikhism. They take her to the Gurdwara to pray, but she sneaks off and prays the Muslim salat. Basant’s mother also forcibly teaches her how to recite Sikh scripture and forces her to wear the silver bracelet Sikhs wear. Bano says to his mother: “I can forget everything in this world. I can forget that I am Naseeruddin’s daughter, that I am the sister of Faheem and Saleem, and that I am Hassan’s fiance. But I can never forget that I am first and foremost a Muslim. I will never bow down to your Guru Granth Sahib!” Nearly a year later, Basanta has not lived up to his promise, claiming that the roadways are still blocked and that traveling to Pakistan is too dangerous of a venture. Eventually, Bano learns of his plans to forcibly marry her and convert her, and she attempts to run away again. This time though, when Basanta catches her, he doesn’t treat her gently as with the first time. He tries whatever method he can to break her; beating her, raping her, forcing her to become a Sikh, marrying her, and in the end, having her give birth to his child.

After many years Basant Singh runs to the roof to go save his child, because he is about to fall off a roof. Instead, he slips, falls, and dies. Bano immediately takes her son and leaves to go to Pakistan. Whilst this is happening, Hassan eventually falls in love with Rabia, another girl, and they become engaged. Bano is taken in by a lady who sends a letter to Hassan to inform him Bano has arrived.

Hassan receives the letter and takes Bano and the child home. Hassan decides to marry Bano, and wants to break off his engagement to Rabia. Rabia and her mother have been told about Hassan breaking off the engagement and visit Hassan’s house. Rabia’s mother tells Rabia to take care of Bano. Rabia obeys her, pleasing Hassan. However one day, he overhears a conversation between his parents about Rabia taking care of Bano so Hassan can see the goodness in her. He argues with Rabia, but Rabia insists that her love is truer than Bano’s. Bano overhears this and interrupts them telling them that if they truly want to do something for her, they should get married. The next day, Hassan finds out that Bano has left the house. Bano is living with a family where she does their household chores, she gets a job in a modern family where she realises that Pakistan is not how she thought it would be.

Bano goes to work for some work-supplies, but the cashier leads her to storage room and attempts to abuse her. She grabs hold of a scissor, and stabs hims to death. The police soon find about Bano’s murder, and arrest her. Bano is taken to a mental aasylum for recovery. Later, Hassan and Rabia who now are husband and wife, visit Bano.
